Gold and silver plated jewellery tend to tarnish or discolour if left out in the open air. Taking proper care of your plated pieces keeps them gorgeous for a longer time by slowing down their tarnish process. A handy tip would be to always put on your jewellery last before heading out and to remove them first when you get home.
Make sure to avoid contact with sweat, perfume, hair products, chlorine, seawater, lotions, suncream and detergents as they may contain bleaches and unknown chemicals.
This means not to wear them in the shower, swim in them or wear them to the beach; salt and water are particularly harmful to jewellery.
Not to mention that sand is highly abrasive. It can wear down the plating and scratch softer stones like quartz and citrine. If you have to wear them to the beach, store them in a cool and dry environment.
Do not sleep with them on and remove your rings before washing your hands.
You can use a soft, clean cloth to wipe your jewellery pieces after wearing them to remove natural body oils, sweat or residue.
If you have to wash them, dry them off thoroughly with a soft damp cloth.
To preserve the condition of your gorgeous pieces, it is recommended to store them in a dry place away from moisture (e.g. bathroom) in a jewellery bag or box. An airtight mini ziplock bags is the simplest way to keep them away from air and other oxidization catalysts.
